Manufacturer - Peter & Ann Bateman, London - part of the famous Bateman family. Hester Bateman's sons, Peter Bateman and John Bateman, registered their mark in 1790. This partnership was of short duration as Jonathan, who married Ann Downlinff, died in 1791. In 1791, the mark was changed to Peter and Ann Bateman. Ann was Jonathan's widow and not Peter's wife

Description - An elegant pair of bright‑cut George III period sugar tongs, decorated with an attractive and finely detailed engraved design along the arms and prettily engraved around the bow with an original owner’s monogram. The shaping is crisp and well balanced, allowing the bright‑cut work to catch the light beautifully. A lovely and characterful pair of late 18th‑century tongs.
Condition - The condition of these cast arm tongs is excellent with neither any damage nor repairs. A very fine pair of tongs
Hallmark - This pair of tongs has manufacturer's cypher for Peter & Ann, together with a London date cypher for 1798
