Description - A fine pair of cast silver sugar tongs, featuring graceful scrolled handles and shell‑shaped nips, dating to the late George III / early George IV period. Cast examples from this era are always appealing, combining robust construction with refined decorative detail.
The tongs are attributed to William Chawner II, a member of the renowned Chawner family—one of the most influential producers of English flatware in the 19th century. Chawner began his seven‑year apprenticeship with the distinguished spoon‑makers William Eley and William Fearn in 1797, later becoming their third partner in 1808. In 1815 he established Chawner & Co., a firm that would grow into one of the century’s largest and most respected makers of silver flatware.
Condition - These tongs are in remarkably good condition for their age
Hallmark - The manufacturer's cypher 'WC' and a 'Lion Passant' are present on the inside of the bows
