A Charles Goodwin, George III Period, Silver Candle Wick Trimmer & Snuffer
Manufacturer - Charles Goodwin, London
Date - c1803
Description - A well‑preserved scissor‑action silver candle wick trimmer and snuffer, featuring a neatly engraved monogram ‘A’ to the side of the snuffer box. The handles are edged with fine thread‑cut detailing, echoed again on the snuffer box, while the rivet cover is adorned with charming star‑shaped decoration. The snuffer itself is raised on three neat ball feet, giving the piece a pleasing stance and a touch of refinement. Altogether, it’s a wonderful, characterful example.
The pointed terminal was designed to lift the wick from hardened wax prior to re‑lighting—an ingenious and practical feature of early lighting tools. A strong, appealing piece for any collector of Georgian and early lighting implements, combining function, craftsmanship, and decorative interest.
